21st October 2024
We are sad to learn that Dr. Robert Twycross, a pioneering figure in hospice and palliative care, has died. He leaves behind a profound legacy that reshaped the way end-of-life care is provided worldwide. As one of the early leaders in this field, Robert’s work helped transform the care of patients with terminal illnesses, with a particular focus on pain and symptom management and the compassionate alleviation of suffering.
Educated at Oxford University, his career in palliative care began in the 1970s at St. Christopher’s Hospice in London, working closely with Dame Cicely Saunders, the founder of the modern hospice movement. His groundbreaking research in pain management, notably in the effective use of opioids for cancer pain, remains foundational, setting the standards for pain control and symptom relief that are used globally today. He was a leading figure behind the World Health Organisation’s guidance on pain management in cancer, and the analgesic ladder.
In addition to his clinical and research achievements, Robert was an extraordinary educator. He was passionate about training the next generation of healthcare professionals, ensuring that the principles of palliative care extended far beyond hospices into hospitals and broader medical practice. His textbooks, lectures, and workshops became essential resources for those entering the field, providing clarity and insight into the complex needs of patients at the end of life.
A tireless advocate for patients, Dr. Twycross was known for his deep empathy, intellectual rigour, and unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for people with life-limiting illnesses. His contributions helped to shift the focus of care towards dignity, comfort, and respect in a patient’s final days.
Robert Twycross’s influence will continue to be felt for generations through the many lives he touched, both personally and professionally. He leaves behind a lasting impact on the hospice and palliative care movement, inspiring countless clinicians and caregivers to approach death, dying and pain management with compassion and care.
Professor Irene Higginson, Scientific Director of CS International said: “Robert’s legacy is far reaching, he was a pioneering figure in hospice and palliative care.
