Media Watch: House Magazine

2nd April 2025

Professor Katherine Sleeman, Laing Galazka Professor of Palliative Medicine at the Cicely Saunders Institute has written an article for The House, the official magazine of the UK’s Parliament at Westminster.

In the article Professor Sleeman outlines some of the inconsistencies within the current debate and highlights prevalent misconceptions about palliative care and how the debate has stoked fear and misunderstanding. The debate of the Bill’s second reading in particular gave a warped view of death and dying.

From the perspective of a palliative care physician, Professor Sleeman notes that the real challenge is that fewer than half of dying people have input from a specialist palliative care team in their last three months of life, and die without the care and support that palliative care provides.
