Congratulations to Dr Matthew Maddocks

10th September 2021

Dr Matthew Maddocks, Reader of Health Services Research at the Cicely Saunders Institute, has been awarded a European Respiratory Society (ERS) Mid-Career Gold Medal for Allied Health Professionals for his research around the intersections between the respiratory, rehabilitation and palliative care. His work aims to improve the provision, scope and quality of rehabilitation for people in the last weeks, months and years of life.

The ERS Mid-Career Gold Medal for Allied Health Professionals honours a researcher with an excellent track record and the potential for further outstanding developments within a field of the allied health professions.

“Better rehabilitation is a major route to improved quality of life for people with respiratory disease, who often live with multiple conditions, and prolonged, fluctuating patterns of disability. Their needs are not met by current health and social care systems; symptoms are often under-recognized; disability is highly prevalent; and siloed systems make integrated care difficult.”

The ERS is one of the leading medical organisations in the respiratory field, with an international membership spanning over 160 countries. The Society prioritises science, education and advocacy in order to promote lung health, alleviate suffering from disease and drive standards for respiratory medicine globally.
