Cicely Saunders Annual Lecture

13th May 2016

On 5 May 2016 the Cicely Saunders Institute welcomed staff, students and supporters to the Cicely Saunders Annual Lecture.  The Annual Lecture series honours the founder of Cicely Saunders International, Dame Cicely Saunders and is given by an international expert in the field.   This year’s lecture was given by cross-bench peer Baroness Ilora Finlay, member of CS International’s Scientific Expert Panel and Professor of Palliative Medicine, University of Cardiff.   In the lecture Baroness Finlay presented research demonstrating the unintended consequences of ‘End of Life’ legislation in different jurisdictions.

The lecture was watched live by researchers, clinicians and supporters at sites around the world – in Africa (Kampala), United States (San Francisco), and Europe (Reggio Emilia, Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Cardiff, Preston and Oxford).

A videocast of the lecture will be available soon on the Institute’s YouTube channel.

Baroness Finlay’s Access to Palliative Care Bill passed the House of Lords but has not received government support in the House of Commons.  The Bill would have required Clinical Commissing Groups to provide advice and support to all patients at the end of life, and their families, within their own area.
