The painting on the left of this photo is the work of Cicely's husband, Marian.

She commissioned it from him as a thank you present to me for writing her biography.

But it is I who am indebted to her. It was the greatest privilege to work with her and to write about her and she could not have been more helpful or more cooperative. Her comments on the text were invariably about facts, never about my judgment - and that reflects, I think, both her scrupulous devotion to accuracy as well as her openness to the opinions of others.
