NIHR Clinician Scientist Award for Dr Katherine Sleeman
16th May 2016
Dr Katherine Sleeman has been awarded a prestigious Clinician Scientist Fellowship from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) to continue her research at the Cicely Saunders Institute. The Fellowship, which started in March 2016 and will last for five years, will involve investigating patterns of care towards the end of life for people with dementia. The aim will be to understand better the factors that are important to allow people with dementia to stay in their own homes towards the very ends of their lives, and prevent them being transferred unnecessarily into hospital.
The Fellowship was awarded following a national competition, and this is the first time an NIHR Clinician Scientist Fellowship has been awarded in the field of palliative medicine.
Katherine said “I am honoured and delighted to have been awarded this Fellowship to continue my research at the Cicely Saunders Institute. With the ageing of our population, improving care for people with dementia as they approach the very ends of their lives is absolutely critical. Within the five year time frame of the Fellowship, I hope that the research findings will help improve care for this very vulnerable group of patients.”
