This photo was taken on 17th October 2009, on 'Deepavali' (Transl: string of lights), which is a Hindu festival celebrating the triumph of goodness over evil. A wax lamp is lit in front of 'Saraswathi', the goddess of learning - who dispels the darkness of ignorance from our lives.

Dame Cicely Saunders’ life was a triumph of goodness over the evil of apathy in the face of suffering, and she brought about knowledge and awareness which dispelled the darkness of ignorance from many lives - including mine.
