I used to believe that, in the bright light of science, everything important could eventually be laid bare. Cicely had a different vision. Whereas on clinical issues such as drug therapy she pursued the scientific method with great rigour, on matters such as the value of art and creative activity for individuals near the end of life, she recognised the limitations of 'evidence'. Her strategy was the product of an inner light.
I gaze fondly across the fireplace. The lamp, with shade painted by my daughter, softly illuminates my wife’s embroidery. Warming by the stove is my bassoon; and likewise, invisibly, the faithful dog Watson.
